Ski enthusiasts – with trembling knees and boots quaking with frost-bitten anticipation – the stakes have never been higher, mostly because we’re talking about actual stakes here. Surprisingly, Colorado’s best ski-area snow stakes, yes, those rinky-dink pieces of picket you’d expect to find impaling a vampire, are your newest webcam celebrities – a story broken by none other than the Connecticut’s The Courant. Nothing screams 21st century quite as loud as inanimate objects gaining web fame.
On the other hand, in the Land of Steady Habits (that’s Connecticut for the uninitiated), the tech vs temperature saga continues at Ski Sundown. They have a live camera dutifully poised towards their intricate snow-making machinery, but alas, they stand helpless against the whims of the weather gods. While they boast a surplus of water and all the latest snow-making doodads, the requisite “cold, dry air in the teen to mid 20’s” has been playing hard to get.
Desperate for some nippy love, they’re calling out to the heavens to send them a cold snap to work their powdery magic. All of this drama can be witnessed live, 24/7, because apparently, even thermometers need their fair share of stardom.
This really begs the age-old question: Who are we more likely to trust, the emblazoned predictions of an overeager webcam focusing on a few sticks in the ground or the technological prowess of an advanced snow-making station praying for an arctic rendezvous?
Whatever your pick, both the CT Ski Sundown and CO Snow Stakes brought to us by the Courant have garnered unprecedented attention this snow season. The CT resort even announced an ecstatic comeback complete with a give-it-your-best-shot-live-cam.
So really, think twice before tossing your lot in with just any snow stake. After all, it’s not every day you make top billings on The Courant’s “Hot (or should we say, Cold) List.”
