Sharpen your edges and tighten your bindings because this is Alex Harrington with Ski Country Mag, bringing you the latest snow country shenanigans. Today, we’re not talking about secret powder stashes or the latest heated ski gear; nope, we’re talking about the cheeky theft spree plaguing our beloved Breckenridge Ski Resort. Or as I like to call it, “National Lampoon’s Adventures in Ski-stealing in Colorado.”
According to reliable reporting from the Summit Daily, ski and snowboard thefts in Breckenridge have skyrocketed! There have been 21 reported incidents since the ski season began. Let that set in for a moment, and remember to sip your hot cocoa slowly.
Surprised? So was Colleen Goettelman, administrative supervisor of the Breckenridge Police Department. She addressed this mischievous crime wave: “It’s a matter of keeping your eyes on your gear, keeping it with you, locking it up.” However, it’s unclear whether she was issuing this advice while assembling her elite team to track down the nonchalant offenders or urging us to be more vigilant.
The thefts seem to be a widespread issue in locations including the base areas of Peak 9, Peak 8, and Peak 7. These roguish thieves have decided to leave no mountain peak untouched. In a bizarrely hilarious twist, Summit County Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons revealed an interesting pattern in the crime spree – “It ebbs and flows over the years, usually at the beginning of the season and the end of the season.”
Mysterious.
On a serious note, please remember that these essential mountain experiences also come with securing the pricey property. As our Sheriff wisely said, “Ski gear is expensive. Protect your property.”
Whether this increase in theft is an uncovered plot from hilariously unfortunate characters bent on chaos or merely a case of disappearing skis and snowboards, Breckenridge Ski Resort is upping its security game with detailed measures. (You can read more in the Summit Daily report)
Until next time, keep your ski gear close and your hot cocoa closer!
